ERROR 216, What the symptoms are
This usually happens only on 64-bit Windows 7 systems.
Our software installs correctly but when it comes to installing our printer drivers, it fails. First it gives the name of the printer with "(nul)" after it. Then it throws an error 216, followed by an error 179X. An error 216 is "invalid driver image".

What causes it
To install a driver in Windows, the installer program first copies the necessary files (DLL, HLP, NTF, etc) to a drivers folder in Windows. This drivers folder is NOT the final resting place for these files, however. It's more of a "holding area" for drivers waiting to be installed. When the installer issues the "InstallDriver" function call, Windows examines the files in that holding area and, if they're OK, Windows copies them to the "3" folder and the driver is added to the internal drivers list in Windows. If the files are found to be wrong in any way, the AddDriver function will fail with a specific error code (216 in this case) and the driver will not install. That's what is happening in our case. The reason is that the drivers files (DLL, HLP, etc.) were found to be already in the holding area so the installer never copied them. In this case the files that are already in the holding area are OLD AND INCOMPATIBLE with Windows 7 so the AddDriver fails. So how did those old, incompatible files get there? They were put there by a competitive RIP company that was using 5 year old drivers.

How to fix it.
Fortunately, the fix is quite simple. Simply delete these four files from \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SPOOL\DRIVERS\x64
PS5UI.DLL
PSCRIPT.HLP
PSCRIPT.NTF
PSCRIPT5.DLL

Then remove the RIP and reinstall it. It will install correctly now.

ERROR 1805,

Failed to Add Monitor, error:  1805
Failed to Add Port, error:  50
Error 2 adding driver
It means the installer could not install the “PowerRIP Server” port in your system. You’ll see that error when trying to install the RIP remotely (with goto meeting or similar) because installing print monitors is only supported in local mode. However, if the RIP was installed before (ever) then the monitor is already there and you can ignore the error.

Another way this error would appear is if you’re running Windows 7  64-bit and trying to install an old version of the RiP which isn’t “win-7 aware”.
